Estimate a personal loan’s costs
- Enter the contractual loan principal, nominal annual interest rate and monthly term.
- Enter a percentage fee and/or fixed fee. Use zero for fees that do not apply.
- Choose whether fees are deducted from disbursed funds or paid separately upfront.
- Review EMI, cash received and borrowing cost; download the breakdown.
How fees affect the result
Combined upfront fee = principal × fee percentage ÷ 100 + fixed fee. EMI is calculated on the full principal using the fixed monthly EMI formula. Deducted fees reduce cash received. Separately paid fees leave cash received unchanged and increase upfront outflow. Interest plus fees is the modeled borrowing cost in both cases.
Example: a 1,200-unit loan at 0% for 12 months, with a 2% fee plus 6 fixed, has EMI 100 and fees 30. If deducted, cash received is 1,170 and repayment is 1,200. If paid separately, cash received is 1,200 and total outflow is 1,230. Both have 30 modeled borrowing cost.
The CFPB personal-installment-loan fee guidance explains why lender disclosures and fees matter. This tool applies no country-specific fee or disclosure rules.
Assumptions and limits
Fixed nominal rate, equal monthly periods, payment in arrears and a one-time upfront fee. Fees are not added to principal or spread over repayments. Other fees, fee taxes, insurance, late charges, prepayments, daily accrual and rate changes are excluded; include applicable known upfront amounts yourself only when consistent with this model. It does not calculate APR, eligibility or a lender quote.
Principal 0.01–1 trillion units; rate 0–100%; term 1–600 whole months; fee percentage 0–99%; fixed fee 0–principal. Combined fees must remain below principal. If a fee is financed, include the financed amount in principal and avoid counting the same fee again as upfront.
Privacy and rounding
Inputs stay in browser memory without uploads or saved financial data. Results are estimates, not advice. CSV exports the cost breakdown and repeats the rate, monthly term, percentage/fixed fees and fee arrangement on every row. Numeric amounts normally use six decimals; the principal preserves its entered numeric precision. Currency display rounding may differ from your lender. Reset restores illustrative defaults. Undo last action restores your raw inputs, term unit, currency search, fee-panel state and accepted result after Reset, removing fees or selecting an arrangement from the comparison. Editing an input discards that recovery step.
Is interest plus fees an annual percentage rate?
No. It is an amount in currency units across the modeled loan. It does not annualize cash flows or apply statutory APR rules.
Why does a fee not change EMI here?
The loan principal and interest terms remain fixed. A deducted fee changes the amount you receive; a separately paid fee changes upfront outflow. Financing fees changes principal and needs different inputs.
