Compress PDF

Reduce PDF size locally with text-preserving structural compression or an explicit image-copy mode. Compare actual pages and file sizes before downloading.

Choose how to reduce size

Repackages PDF objects without downsampling images or turning text into pictures. Already optimized files may not shrink.

Undo changes restores your PDF, settings, acknowledgement, comparison and completed download after edits or Clear. An accepted replacement or completed compression ends recovery.

Choose the method for your document

Start with structural compression for reports, letters and PDFs with searchable text. It compresses the document’s object structure without changing image resolution. For example, an older report saved without compressed objects may shrink; an already optimized scan may not.

Image-copy mode can reduce large scans and photo-heavy documents. It renders every visible page onto white and encodes it as a JPEG. Use the lowest resolution that still keeps your small text readable. This mode removes selectable text, links, bookmarks, attachments and accessibility information, so it requires your explicit acknowledgement.

Review before sending

  1. Choose a plain, unsigned PDF.
  2. Try structural compression first, or choose an image copy for scans.
  3. Check the exact before/after sizes and compare pages, including fine print.
  4. Download the useful result and keep your original.

If compression does not save bytes, the download stays the exact original. No target size or fixed percentage reduction is guaranteed. A visually similar image copy is not a replacement for an accessible or searchable document.

Privacy and limits

Files stay in your browser. Encrypted, signed and interactive-form PDFs are unsupported. The input limit is 20 MB and 100 pages; image copies are limited to 30 pages, 8 million pixels per page, 80 million total rendered pixels and 40 MB of encoded images. Large sheets may require lower resolution. Operations have bounded deadlines and can be cancelled. Invalid replacements, cancellation and failed retries preserve available work and completed comparisons. Undo changes restores your source, settings, acknowledgement, comparison and download after edits or Clear. Accepted replacements or completed compression end recovery.

Structural compression keeps the loaded document instead of copying only its pages. This tool does not sanitize scripts, attachments or other embedded content. Keep originals, use trusted files, and check your result in your normal PDF reader. No OCR is performed.
