Background replacer

Replace a plain image background with white, a colour or transparency using connected colour selection, manual brushes and a local export preview.

Choose the background you want to replace

Best for a plain, clearly separated background or an image with existing transparency. Click or tap your background, select its colour region, then preview the replacement. Use the brushes only where the edges need correction.

Drop one image here. Up to 10 MiB, 4 million pixels and 4,096 pixels per side. Larger images need resizing first.

Click or tap in Pick mode. For keyboard use, expand Precise coordinates or focus the image: arrows move one pixel, Shift + arrows move ten, Enter applies the selected action.

1. Select a plain background

Pick up to eight points for disconnected areas. Each point selects connected pixels within the colour tolerance.

Start low. Increasing tolerance may select similar colours in the subject. Fine hair, shadows and busy backgrounds can need manual correction.

No selection yet. Existing transparency can be filled without selecting a background.

Drag to brush. Restore brings back the original pixels. Undo retains up to eight mask changes in this tab. Preview points and overlay are excluded from exports.

    2. Review and replace

Transparent output uses PNG. JPG uses 95% browser encoding quality. Neither format restores detail or guarantees acceptance as a document photo.

Nothing is uploaded or saved automatically.

Use a background this method can separate

Pick a point in a plain background, select its connected region, and review the red overlay. The algorithm follows neighbouring pixels similar to the chosen colour. It does not recognize a person, hair, clothing or objects. A matching colour inside a disconnected part of the subject is not selected unless another path connects it.

Use additional points for separate background areas. Tolerance measures the maximum difference in red, green or blue, scaled from 0–100; it is not a perceptual colour or confidence score. Higher values can reach the subject. The selection uses hard colour boundaries; it does not reconstruct fine hair, remove colour spill or infer hidden details. For complex or low-contrast scenes, manual correction may be substantial and a dedicated editor may be more suitable.

    Review and correct the selection

Erase adds to the removal mask; Restore reduces it and brings back original pixels. Brush edges are antialiased by the browser. Use Selection overlay to review removal and Replacement preview to inspect the result. Point and tolerance edits make the selection stale until you select again. Rebuilding replaces brush corrections, with Undo available. History retains eight selection changes, bounded to 32 MB of current mask history. One additional complete source-recovery checkpoint is retained after Clear or a successful replacement; it is discarded when the tab closes.

Existing transparency can be filled directly: choose White or Custom colour and prepare the download without picking points. Choose Transparent to keep the remaining foreground on transparency. PNG supports transparency; JPG flattens against the chosen colour. Exports preserve image dimensions and use a local sRGB canvas. JPG is lossy, even if dimensions stay the same.

    Check the actual exported image

Prepare download creates the encoded file and displays it before enabling download. Preview guides and the red overlay are excluded. Image metadata is not retained. An invalid or cancelled replacement preserves the working image, selection and prepared download. Restore previous image recovers the full source, settings, selection history and prepared download after Clear or a successful replacement. Cancel or Clear discards pending results; native decoding and encoding cannot be forcibly interrupted, while background selection runs in a terminable worker.

PNG, JPG and still WebP inputs are limited to 10 MiB, 4 million pixels and 4,096 pixels per side. PNG animation becomes a still frame. Animated WebP, GIF, SVG and HEIC are unsupported. Processing has a 30-second wait deadline. Nothing is uploaded, stored as a draft or processed by an external AI service.

Document photos need their own rules

Check whether the issuing body permits background edits. A white background does not establish passport, visa or ID acceptance; appearance, lighting, pose and other requirements still apply. Our passport print presets preserve originals, while this tool deliberately edits selected pixels.
